Actors and strategies of household solid waste management in Bamako

Abstract

Household solid waste management is particularly acute in the Bamako District, mainly because of population growth, and the changes in production methods and consumption. Today, the sector is characterized by a weak organization of the actors, a lack of adequate means and a lack of sustainable strategies. This study aims to identify the actors and analysing the strategies for sustainable management of household solid waste in Bamako. The methodology used was based on a literature review, field observation and quantitative and qualitative surveys of 300 households selected in four neighbourhoods of the Bamako District and 66 persons from several categories of actors. The collected data was computer-processed using SPSS 17.00, Excel 2016, Map Info Professional 8.5 software and speech content analysis.

The results of the study revealed the intervention of many actors involved in household solid waste management in Bamako and their weak coordination. The study also showed that the sustainable management of household solid waste in Bamako currently requires the reorganization of pre-collection and collection, the creation of transit depots and technical landfills. Moreover, this management requires the treatment of waste and the establishment of a sustainable system of financing of the sector. The strategies proposed could contribute to job creation, while improving the living environment of the populations. However, their success requires a real political will of the urban authorities and a steady commitment of all the actors.
