Abstract

Abstract

The objective of the study was to analyze infection control practices in the medical pediatrics department of the Pediatric University Hospital Charles-de-Gaulle of Ouagadougou. This was a cross-sectional study that took place from December 15, 2014 to February 15, 2015. It concerned the medical pediatrics department of the Pediatric University Hospital Charles-de-Gaulle. The administration of written questionnaires and observation were the techniques used for data collection. The nursing staff had a good theoretical knowledge of the objectives of infection prevention, in 85.3% of cases. However, only two of the five World Health Organization hand hygiene indications were well known. Wearing personal protective equipment, such as gowns, safety shoes and gloves, was effective among the different occupational categories. Adherence to hand hygiene was 42.6% among doctors and 40% among nurses. All treatment rooms were equipped with hand hygiene facilities except for single-use hand towel dispensers. Only 45.8% of hospital wards were equipped with hand hygiene facilities and liquid soap was not available. The gaps in knowledge, resources, and practices in infection control were found to compromise the quality of care.
