Introduction: Family planning can prevent more than 30% of maternal deaths and 10% of infant mortality if couples space pregnancies more than two years apart. Our study aimed to identify the determinants of the use of family planning services in the postpartum period in the Aplahoué-Djakotomey-Dogbo health zone in 2017 in Benin.
Method: This cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study involved 480 women who gave birth in the last 12 months in the study area, selected by cluster sampling. The top-down stepwise logistic regression model was performed at the 5% threshold.
Results: The rate of use of postpartum family planning services was 15.83%. Almost all of the respondents had heard of Family Planning at least once (92.71%). The most cited source of information was health centers (71.85%). The condom was the most used method of contraception 40.69%, followed by pills 27.11%. The use of services in the Study Area in 2017 was influenced by profession (p <0.001), ethnicity (p = 0.005), amenorrhea (p <0.001), use before pregnancy of methods contraceptives (p <0.001), discussion of FP with her partner (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: This study showed a high unmet need for postpartum family planning (67.92%) and therefore a high risk of unwanted pregnancy. Actions focused on the identified determinants, including information and communication for behavior change, are suggested to improve the use of family planning services in this study area.
