This was a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study aimed at examining the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nursing staff in order to reduce risky behaviors and stigmatizing attitudes toward HIV infection within this population. Data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire and entered using Epi Info version 3.5.1 software. The participation rate was 90.1%. 20.2% of nurses believed that HIV-positive patients should be isolated in care units. A good level of knowledge about sexual prevention methods for HIV/AIDS was found in 37% of the population. The main source of information was the media. The level of knowledge was statistically correlated with age. 15.3% of sexually active nurses reported having already been treated for an STI. Consistent condom use during sexual intercourse was practiced by 6.5% of nurses. Multiple sexual partners and having sex with a sex worker were statistically linked to sex (p < 0.001). Anal and oral penetration were reported by 2.1% and 18.5% of the nurses surveyed, respectively. Two nurses reported a positive result on their most recent HIV test. It is important to periodically reinforce nursing staff's knowledge through media to improve their practices and prevent HIV transmission.
