Given the urgency and scale of the sexual and reproductive health needs of young people, particularly schoolchildren, it is essential to analyze the sexual behaviors that expose them to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The aim of this study is to determine the factors associated with STI-risk sexual behavior, i.e., multiple sexual partnerships and the failure to use condoms systematically during sexual intercourse among schoolchildren in Burkina Faso. A cross-sectional study that included students from 3 groups of secondary schools in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso was conducted and factors associated with risk behaviors were identified using logistic regression. A total of 352 sexually active schoolchildren were included in the study; 19.3% of them did not systematically use a condom during sexual intercourse. Being single, having less than 6 sexual encounters per month and watching pornographic films were the factors associated with condom use among the students. Male sex and lack of leisure activities were associated with multiple sexual partnerships. These results identify risk groups and modifiable behaviors that can be addressed by targeted interventions among students. For example, a sexual and reproductive health program for adolescents, including STI awareness-raising activities, systematic condom use and leisure activities such as school sports, needs to be developed and implemented in order to effectively combat STIs in this population group.
